Cafe Networking Event
CPLN Area Partnership recently hosted a Cafe Networking Event in the Rossecourt Resource Centre aimed at over 55s living in the Clondalkin, Palmerstown, Lucan and Newcastle areas. The purpose of the event was to give local people the opportunity to meet and share experiences of being older and to look at ways the voice of older people can be strengthened into the future.
The event was very successful and attracted people from around the county. People highlighted the many issues currently affecting older people in the community. Different means were also suggested as to how older people themselves could organise locally and build their collective voice. Brenda Whitely, an active age worker in Leitrim and Cavan, spoke about the experiences of older people she worked with in rural Ireland and how she facilitated initiatives that built the confidence of local older people and made them much more willing and able to bring issues forward to local agencies, political representatives etc.
People at the networking event came up with many real issues that affect older people locally such as transport, security and fear of isolation. People also expressed concern about changes that may be coming down the line that will affect their pensions, medical cards, free travel or phone units. However, there were also real issues expressed in relation to negative societal attitudes to older people. "People are constantly calling me "ole one", "I am often being told you can't do this or that and being pushed into a box" were some of the comments. The event produced a number of outcomes in terms of recommendations as to how to build an advocacy programme in the CPLN area. One of the strongest recommendations was to build a representative Older People's Advocacy Network in the CPLN area.
CPLN Area Partnership is committed to following up on the recommendations of the report. This part of the Partnership's work is funded through the Get Vocal Programme of Age and Opportunity. For further information please contact Anne Troy @/ 01 4508748 / 087 213 1854 atroy@cpln.ie

Sustainability of Community Early Childhood Care and Education Settings
Community ECCE settings face ongoing challenges in ensuring their long term sustainability. Most recently those services offering flexible child care to support individuals in training are finding it harder to deliver this service given the limitations of the funding available. If your service is in the CPLN Area and would like support in the following areas:
- Business/finance
- Human Resource
then please contact Susan Brocklesby on 01 -4508748 ( Monday - Wednesday 8-4pm) to access mentoring supports.
Alternatively if you would like to raise your concerns about the challenges in running community ECCE settings or accessing a suitable placement for your child as a parent then please contact Susan on the number above or s.brocklesby@cpln.ie
Supporting Best Outcomes for Children
Early Childhood Development Working Group hosted a morning seminar in December for those working in the early years sector. A wide range of agencies attended from including HSE services to community and voluntary groups to community based early childhood care and education services to local residents/parents.
The aim of the seminar was to inform locally based services about national or county wide developments or organisations. The Karen Mc Cauley presented an informative and engaging presentation on the role and work of the Office of Ombudsman for Children. This promoted good discussion and clarification on how to access the services of the Ombudsman for Children but also highlighted the need to provide this information to the many parents with whom we work. Ciairin de Bruin outlined the role of Start Strong, an organisation who are promoting the importance of establishing a high quality accessible Early Childhood Education Sector in line with international best practice. Start Strong take a long term view of how we can make changes to the sector through government policy. They encourage groups, individuals and parents to stay in touch either by becoming a member or signing up for their newsletter through the website : http://www.startstrong.ie/
The focus then shifted to a county wide level and Maria O Donohue and Mick Mc Kiernan presented from South Dublin Children's Services Committee about their role, the focus of the committee and developments within the committee. They also presented and hold some important statistical and research information about the South Dublin Area, in particular issues relating or impacting on children.
All available presentations are attached for download.
Susan Brocklesby, Early Childhood Development Co-ordinator encouraged any groups or individuals to get in touch with her if they would be interested in participating in the Early Childhood Development Working Group or if there particular issues they would like the working group to focus on. Susan can be contacted on: 01 4508748 Monday to Wednesday 8-4pm
